Practical Self Care

Hi Friends, I hope that you’re having a great week! Henry and I have been consistently busy since about May I’d say and its been so draining. Don’t get me wrong its a lot of good stuff! But doesn’t mean it doesn’t wear you down. I am finding that self care, practical self care when you’re short on time is super important. So here’s a list of something I’ve been doing recently! I will be sure to link all my favorite products!

REMEMBER WHEN SHOPPING: Use Ebates for cash back and coupons! Honey is a great back up when Ebates doesn't work on the site.

Self Care 101:

Pick up - Picking up my apartment always helps to destress me! It helps to clear my mind and I instantly feel better. It’s also something I have control over and can see results right away.

Write down a list - Whether its what you grateful for, to do list, or things bothering you. Getting it down on paper helps. I feel like it makes the things swirling in my head a lot less scary. I like this journal a lot too since it has quotes but a lot of empty space for me to write whatever.

Meditation - I use to think meditation sounded stupid but even if you can’t do it “well” it forces you to sit down and take a few minutes to yourself. I like the app Simple Habit its mostly free!

Basic Pampering:

DIY Face mask: I tried some of these from Buzzfeed, and I really liked them because they were items I had around the house! Here is something for every skin type:

  1. Hydrating - Ground oats, coconut oil, honey

  2. Exfoliating - Coffee grounds, cocoa powder, coconut oil

  3. Soothing - Pumpkin, brown sugar, water, vitamin e oil

  4. Rejuvenating - Greek yogurt, honey, matcha powder

  5. Acne - Turmeric, honey, coconut oil

You can find the recipes here. The acne one is here. And if you don’t have time to make these here are some of my favorite sheet masks for acne, brightening, and soothing.

Dry Brushing - This is where you take a body brush and literally brush you skin, I love it because I feel like all the dead skin is getting off and it helps circulation. Story is it helps with cellulite but I won’t speak to that because I have no idea. I love doing this because its pretty gentle then I take a bath and slather lotion on I feel like my skin soaks it up even better! Here is my dry brush!

Bubble Bath & a glass of wine - Because duh, I can’t wait to get this bath caddy off our registry to.

It’s the little things:

Take a hike - I think that walks and getting outside help, but I find hikes are even better. I can’t check my phone when Im hiking because I need to pay attention to where Im going and can really soak in nature. Connecting with the outside and fresh air I think always does the body good!

Call a friend - When we get busy it’s hard to nurture those relationships and friends are the best for venting or just making us laugh. So while your running errands give you friend a call on your next drive!

Read a book or magazine - You don’t need to delve into a huge book even a magazine will do something to take your mind elsewhere and not worry about all your to-do’s.

Take a nap - There’s no shame in that game. Sometimes you just need to let your body recharge, and you’ll wake up feeling so much better.

Treat yourself to something small - I’d say under $20. I find sometimes when Im stress I think I deserve all these things and it adds up. Or I drink every latte I can! It will be more of a treat if it’s a one time thing not a crutch.

Try something new - It doesn’t have to be something life altering but changing up your routine helps to feel like you aren’t constantly working.

Essential Oils or Candle - Lighting your favorite candle helps me to relax but essential oils really help especially rollers like this one.

Bake - I never bake, Im always cooking. So when I bake something, it feels like a real treat to me. Now I try not to eat everything and give some away but I do love some good chocolate chips and Joanna’s recipe is pretty good!

You do what you need to to feel better! Pushing yourself helps no one in the long run. Thats what I been learning, so slow down and take some things off your plate!

September Intentions

So it seems that we are 10 days into the month and I'm just setting intentions, this is a lot of how my time has been going recently.  Two months out from a wedding is no job my friends. I find though the busier I get the more important it is to set goals and intentions so that I can keep working towards my overall goal.  So here they are for this month!

1. Go on date nights - Even though Henry and I are spending time together planning a wedding and moving we need to make sure that we are still making an effort to connect and enjoy each other's time! So I have written down some places I want to try, like a new ice cream rolling place and I can't wait to just take some time to slow down and regroup.

2. Keep up with skin care - My skin care has slightly fallen to the side since we have been so busy but I wan't clearer skin.  So Im going to keep up with my usual products better, drink water do a mask twice a week and for the love of god hopefully not stress pick my face!

3. Attend work out classes 4 times a week - With getting Billy I have been using our walks as exercise which they are, but Im not getting a good sweat in and I'd still like to lose 5 pounds.  So lets get to work!

4. Be intentional with my downtime - Whether that setting up meetings, making to do list, getting my thoughts together or reading a book.  I don't want to at the end of the night sit down on the couch and watch 2 hours of tv and feel like I never relaxed.  I want to be more conscious of my time so that everything is hopefully a little less stressful!

What are some goals or intentions that you have set for yourself recently? Any tips on how youre accomplishing them?

What's New with Keri

Its like where's Keri but where's Waldo.  Ha, life has been INSANE y'all.  So so so much of it is good stuff.  Working really hard over these past 3 years and having it all come together AT THE SAME TIME!  But it doesn't make it any less overwhelming.  Things are slowing down a little.  Well at least it feels like it and I feel like I can give more of my time to the blog (finally).

So whats going on:

- We have busy every weekend but 2 so far since memorial day weekend.  Yikes this has been rough to catch up on adult life you know like cooking, cleaning, laundry.  Which called for a lot of new outfits, scrub outfits and take out.

- We are almost 3 months out till the wedding.  Let me tell you I thought it would be beginning that was overwhleming with picking the venors.  No sir, its all the little details.  Like escort cards and table numbers.  SOS send help for crafting

- We moved into our dream space.  I literally have to pinch myself every day.  We worked really hard to get here, afford here and still save.  Seriously 5 apartments opened out of 170.  And you know I was calling and emailing every day.

- We may be adding a furry friend to the mix.  More on that soon!

- Health and diet have taken a total back seat.  Not having that realize has really been hurting my mental health and not helping me get to my fitness goals for the wedding.  Theres good and bad to life and Im not giving the Instagram reel here.

- Im getting veneers.  Im in the temporary phase, and I immediately called my mom and sobbed because I hate how they look (they are temporary I know) but Im so self conscious I don't even want to go out. T-8 days till prettier teeth come in.  Let me know if you want a post on this, I broke my teeth in the 5th grade and Im getting them fixed for good.

- Making friends a high priority.  I have moved so many times in my life that friendships have always been hard for me cause Im always leaving.  So Im trying to really cultivate relationships and put the time in.  That can be hard on this introvert extrovert.

- The blog took a total back seat.  I just couldn't do it all.  And something needed to be taken off my plate.  I felt so guitly every day I wasn't working harding on it.  I had all these goals and everything took a big pause.  But Im excited and hungry to get going again.  Which I haven't been able to say that for a while about the blog.

So there is it! The good, the bad, the super overwhelming.  I have had appointments, after work, during work and before work to keep it all going.  So thanks for you patience if you're still hanging in there.  I really appreciate it! Im excited for what's to come!

Candidly,

Keri

Real Talk: Take the break

Henry and I have been running around like chickens with our heads cut off ever since Memorial Day weekend.  Almost every weekend has been busy with visits or weddings and now packing for our move.  I was being pulled in every direction, trying to make time for my new job at work, wedding planning, being present with family and continuing my healthy lifestyle.  I was pushing until I could feel my body start to slow down and give out and I thought to myself something has to give.  I just didn't know what.

I had to stop everything for a few days and only do things that really needed to get done.  So I took a few days off social media and just refocused.  I feel like so many of us say yes to everything and try to give everything 110% leaving us not caring for our own well being.

A lot of my anxiety and "need" to do things often come from social media.  Feeling like I have to post constantly and every post has to be epic. It was just too much pressure and so unrealistic.

So I didn't go on social media for a few days and it was crazy. I was able to get so much done and feel productive. I felt good about myself. I took everything off my list and only added back the things that really needed to be done.

I guess that whole point of this post is to let you know if you're feeling overwhelmed and have a lot going on, its okay to take a step back.  Take a break.  All the to-dos will be there in the morning but if we aren't taking care of ourselves then theres no point in getting everything checked off.

I recommend for everyone to take a few days or even just a few hours off social media every day.  It allows time for you to get done without being distracted.  And I find often times I go on social media and then am left with bad feelings and that just doesn't help me to be productive in any aspect of my life.

Remember friends, its important to take care of our selves and mental health so take the break if you need it.  I promise everyone will be here when you come back!

Instagram Q+A

IM BACKKK! I took a much-needed break from the blog and social media, more on that in another post but I'm back and refreshed! So I thought I'd start with a post from the question and answer I had on Instagram! If you're not following me there, you should because a giveaway is coming soon!

Questions:

Do I have a full-time job? If so how do I handle both?

Yes! I am a marketing analysis, by day. And to be honest, it getting a little trickery.  But I try to set aside certain hours every week and knock a lot out.  So, for example, I will sit down every other week and get all my post done for the next two weeks.  (That's not usually how it goes but I try.) I block out time to get certain tasks done all at once.  And I try to check social media a few times a day.  I think my lower engagement on social media hurts my growth but that's okay because it's all about balance.  And I promise if you ever tag me on social media I'll always respond!

How did I get started?

I saw some wallpapers on pinterest that were calendars and I thought how clever and it would help me to stay organized at my first big girl job but every calendar I found were for incorrect months so I asked my then boyfriend (now fiance) to help me update them since he had a design background. I got a lot of compliments at work that I thought it might be fun to share!

Why did I start?

I think this is a little different than how because thats how I sorta stumbled upon. The blog all really started after having trouble finding a job out of college. I worked as a recruiter for a little for a company I thought was a dream, but it was only a contract and then after losing my *dream* job, I thought starting a blog all about I had learned post grad would really help people.  I also thought the wallpapers would help you to stay organized at whatever you were working on! But Ive been at my current job for 3 years now so I sorta outgrew the find a job phase and Candidly Keri evolved from Life After Graduation.

How many hours do I spend on the blog?

I'd say 15-30 hours a week, depending on if I worked ahead or if its wallpaper week!

How am I?

Someone asked this and I thought it would be fun to answer honestly, rather than just with good.  I was really overwhelmed for a little bit there but taking a step back allowed me to check some major things off my list and now I'm feeling better.  But I'm anxiously awaiting our big move in 2 weeks!

Can I make a tutorial?

These next two questions sorta bummed me out but I thought it would be good to answer because I constantly get asked about changing fonts or styles of wallpapers I have created for free.  If you'd like a change to a wallpaper Im happy to do so for some money! My time is valuable and I create a lot of awesome stuff for free!

A tutorial - sorry but that won't be coming, but behind the scenes, videos will.  As to how I make the wallpapers, I find photos I can use legally and create everything from scratch in photoshop from there.  Then Henry codes them and puts them on the site!

Can you sell a Candidly Keri wallpaper?

No stealing my wallpapers and selling them is illegal since I own the rights to all my work. Tsk Tsk

Top 5 countries I'd like to visit?

Alright, a fun question to lighten the mood! I'd love to go to Greece, Germany, Scotland, some island like Bora Bora, and Czech Republic.

When did I discover my talent?

This is very kind, I just started making the calendar wallpapers thinking they could be helpful, I ever expected them to take off like they did!

Where do I find my inspiration?

Nature mostly! I try to make my wallpapers centered around the seasons, I also like to mimic patterns I've seen.  Or I go on pinterest like everyone else and pin lots of quotes, and see what resonates with me the most that month!

What keeps me motivated to keep working on the blog + social platforms?

Mostly anyone reading this! I know that a lot of people depend on me for wallpapers each month so that's why I feel like I can't stop.  I also just want to see where the blog goes.  Henry and I have improved our skills, design and the site so much since we've started.  We love growning and learning about all this stuff and I think that's a huge part of our drive!

If you guys have any other questions drop them in the comments and I will respond! I love doing the Q+A and hopefully, we can do another one soon!

Candidly,

Keri
