Hi Friends, so I have FINALLY jumped on the bandwagon that is coconut oil. So at first I thought people were crazy for putting coconut oil with everything, I would just roll my eyes. But I feel like recently I have been spending a ton of money towards my skin and hair and it just wasn't paying off. I thought there was no harm in buying some coconut oil. I assumed that it was expensive but to my surprise it was only about $7 at the grocery store and a little goes a long way.
So I did what any girl does with at home skin care things and went on Pinterest. I have to admit I had some trouble with figuring out the best way to use coconut oil but I think I have it down now.
First, I used just coconut oil in my hair and left it on overnight. I have a lot of split ends and wanted my hair to really soak it all up. The next morning I had to wash my hair about 3 times. I have cleansing shampoo because of my oily hair, and I felt as though washing it so many times stripped my hair of all the moisture. But I will have to say my hair the next week felt HEALTHIER not softer, which I was I not expecting.
Second, I went online and saw coconut oil and olive oil really helped damaged hair. I tried this recipe for about 2 hours, but again felt like getting all the oil out just stripped my hair, even though it felt healthier again.
For my third try I did a little more searching on another recipe, that wouldn't feel like I was undoing all the progress I had made. This one was just coconut oil, for however long, and then rinse your hair in a mixture of one egg and water, also to start by using COLD water instead of warm. This was perfect! I only had to wash my hair twice and I believe its because I didn't really rub the first time.
So as for the PERFECT recipe for a coconut oil hair mask, I would say take some coconut oil fresh out of the microwave (heated coconut oil helps to really penetrate the hair and lock in moisture) with some olive oil mixed in. Start at your roots and comb upwards to as high as you would like. Coconut oil is really good for your scalp so don't worry thinking it will make your hair oily. Leave it in from anywhere from 30 minutes to overnight. I think its best to wrap it in a towel or a shower cap to lock in the heat and to not get oil everywhere. Then get one egg whisk it in a bowl with water. Coat your hair thoroughly with it in the shower and try to scrub your hair with COLD or cool water, just as long as its not a warmer temperature, it really doesn't help to get the oil out. Then wash your hair as normal! And there you go, on your way to healthier hair!
